Pot Lid Guide

Why Should You Use a Pot Lid When Cooking?

Using a lid while cooking has several advantages:

  • Consistent cooking temperature
  • Faster cooking time
  • Lower energy consumption

A pot lid not only improves cooking results but also reduces the time and energy required. That’s why Fissler recommends cooking with the lid on whenever the cooking method allows.

An exception is the preparation of green vegetables like broccoli or green beans. To preserve their color, it’s best to cook them without a lid. This is because organic acids are released into the cooking water and condensation, which transform the green pigment chlorophyll into pheophytin – causing the vegetables to turn greyish brown. Cooking without a lid allows much of these acids to escape with the steam, slowing down discoloration. A pinch of baking soda can also help neutralize the water and prevent chlorophyll from fading.

What Makes a High-Quality Pot Lid

A high-quality lid is both visually appealing and functionally beneficial. Fissler pot lids not only meet the highest standards in material quality and precision fit, but also offer outstanding performance during everyday use.

Shape

Pot lids should be sturdy and well-shaped to provide optimal resistance against rising steam or foam.

Seal

Only a tightly sealing lid retains the condensation heat inside the pot, helping it reach boiling temperature much faster.

Material

Pot lids made of 18/10 stainless steel are particularly durable and easy to clean. They are oven-safe up to 450°F.

Pot lids made of tempered glass are impact-resistant and can handle gradual temperature changes up to 356°F. They allow convenient see-through cooking without aroma or energy loss. They also include a high-quality stainless steel rim with an integrated silicone gasket to prevent water seepage and reduce tension in the glass when heated.

How to Properly Clean Pot Lids

Both Fissler metal lids and glass lids are dishwasher-safe. However, for maximum longevity, we recommend gentle handwashing.

Special care instructions for stainless steel 18/10 lids and tempered glass lids:

Before first use, stainless steel pot lids should be cleaned according to the instructions using warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth or sponge.

Never rinse hot glass lids with cold water. sudden temperature changes can create extreme tension in the material, potentially causing the glass to shatter.
